Newport Networks Forms Strategic Partnership with UTStarcom

1460 Session Border Controller completes successful service trial with Chinese Tier-1 Operator

Caldicot UK, 31st May, 2007 – Newport Networks, a leading developer of carrier class Session Border Controllers (SBCs) and Border Gateways, announced today that it had signed a strategic partnership agreement with UTStarcom a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end Next Generation Network solutions and services.

UTStarcom has tested the Newport Networks 1460 session border controller and completed a successful service trial with an incumbent Tier-1 operator in China. The 1460 provides secure connectivity between the operator's PHS and PSTN networks. During the trial the 1460 set a new benchmark for interconnect session border controller performance. UTStarcom will offer the Newport range of 1460 and 310 integrated SBCs, Border Controllers and Border Gateways as part of their session border control solutions for both multimedia access and carrier to carrier interconnect applications.

"I am delighted that UTStarcom will adopt Newport's session border controllers in its solution for China and the Asia Pacific region. It is a strong endorsement that Newport's expanding range of high performance border control and gateway products are well suited to this type of demanding interconnect application," commented John Everard CEO of Newport Networks. "We are extremely pleased to be working with UTStarcom to deliver this solution."

"Interconnect between the mobile and fixed line networks places a huge demand on the interconnecting devices. We selected the Newport solution because its multi-processor architecture delivered consistent high performance under all network conditions," commented Gene Wuu, VP of mSwitch Core Networks at UTStarcom. "The requirements of our customers are extremely demanding, and the Newport 1460 allowed us to meet and exceed these needs." he added.

"UTStarcom has been a great partner to work with," commented Michael Li, Vice President of Newport Networks, Asia Pacific. "Their experience in this market has been of great value to Newport and we look forward to working together on future projects."
