310 Platform - Product Specification
The Newport Networks 310 is a compact, rack mountable platform measuring just 4U high, but capable of delivering high performance from up to 8 processors. Available in three variants, the 310 platform is capable of hosting any of Newport Networks’ application suites, these include Session Border Controller, Border Gateway and Border Controller.
The 310 platform is a 4U high 19” unit that can support from 1,000 to over 25,000 concurrent calls depending on the chosen application.
Carrier Grade
The 310 has been designed to offer the highest possible availability when using active/stand-by pairs of processors and physical link aggregation (802.3-2002) to provide link resilience and load balancing. The 310 has the option of dual DC power supplies.
At the core of the 310 there is a 10 Gigabit switch matrix which offers unrestricted connections between all internal cards. The Switch and Management card can monitor the health of all the processors in the platform and initiate a fail-over to a hot stand-by processor if it detects the failure of an active processor.
Flexible Range
The 310 is available in three different models each offering different combinations of connectivity and processing power.
310 800 - This is the entry level model which offers eight 10/100 Ethernet ports and four application processors. The 310 800 can support over 4,000 concurrent G.711 calls with more than enough processing power to met the expected peak calling rates.
310 1600 - This model offers sixteen 10/100 ports and eight processors and offers superb flexibility by being able to use the processors either singly for maximum performance or in active/stand-by pairs for maximum resilience.
310 2800 - This model offers the highest bandwidth of the range with two electrical Gigabit Ethernet and eight 10/100 Ethernet interfaces. With four processors and 2.8 Gbits/sec this model is ideal for media intensive applications, it is capable of supporting over 10,000 G.711 calls.
Multi-processor Architecture
The 310 platform, in common with Newport Networks’ larger chassis, supports a highly flexible multi-processor architecture. Depending on the model, its four or eight processors can be allocated to any task. Application processors can run either as single instances of an application or in active/stand-by pairs, meaning that failure of a processor has little or no impact on traffic. In addition, all Line Interface Cards use dedicated networks processors to perform packet analysis in real-time. This architecture, born out of roots in deep packet inspection, offers unparalleled performance which remains predictable under variable traffic loads.
Resilient Connections
The 310 range includes 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connections depending on the model. All Ethernet connections support Link Aggregation and load balancing (802.3-2002), meaning up to 8 physical links can be grouped into one logical, resilient link.
Power Flexibility
For smaller installations the 310 is available with a single AC auto-sensing power supply. Where DC power is available the 310 can be supplied with a dual DC power option. The power can be connected to the two power distribution units from two independent sources, thus increasing the resilience of the platform.
Applications
Information on the Session Border Controller, Border Gateway and Border Controller application software can be found in the separate application software data sheets.
