Newport Networks Signs Major OEM Agreement with Leading European Fixed/Mobile Network Equipment Vendor

07th March, 2008. Newport Networks Limited announced today that negotiations have been completed regarding the supply of a broad range of Border Gateway products to a world leading vendor of Next Generation Networks and solutions. An OEM Agreement has been completed and signed by both parties. Confidentiality provisions of the Agreement preclude the naming of the vendor at this time. The Company anticipates substantial business arising from this Agreement. Revenue is expected to grow through 2008 with the main impact in 2009 and beyond.

Abstract:

The Internet has become a social network, an entertainment network, a business tool and, often, a telephony substitute. Operators are migrating to converged IP networks to lower costs and provide a wider range of services - many in real time. WebPages and email do not require realtime availability, but VoIP and IPTV do. The broadband networks that the Internet uses will have to be upgraded to provide quality of service similar to what we have become accustomed to with telephony.

This week we took part in a Westminster eForum event "VoIP and the future of fixed-line telephony". The event attracted over 100 parliamentary and senior telecoms representatives. Now the interesting thing about this seminar was that despite the title containing the 'fixed' word, a great deal of the discussions centrered around mobility, its advantages and its problems. The objective was to provide a broad overview of VoIP technology and businesses, and the diversity of topics covered showed just how much VoIP is happening now, not tomorrow. Newports' Expanded Product Range

As the Session Border Controller market continues to evolve, newport has introduced a new range of Border Controllers to its portfolio. The 310 Border Gateway - pictured right - has been introduced to address the needs of highly distributed VoIP networks. It provides the operator with the granularity required to optimise network design and push media handling to the edge of the network. Starting from just 1,000 media sessions the 310 Border Gateway provides a flexible entry level configuration which still has the flexibility to grow to handle over 30,000 sessions in a compact 4U chassis.

Using the 310 Border Gateway for small and medium scale locations and the Newport 1460 Border Gateway for large deployments, Newport offers a range of Border Gateways to suit all sizes of operator requirement. Responding to operator demand for a standardised control interface, the product can be controlled via a Megaco/H.248 interface by the 1460 Border Controller or a 3rd party Softswitch.

With the strong momentum in IMS, Tier 1 operators are quickly beginning to move from integrated Session Border Control to a model where media handling is separated from signalling. Some require 3rd party control of the Border Gateway, others require signalling processing to be performed in a few well protected nodes in the network, many are building convergence ready architectures that mandate signalling and media separation. This customer draw has led Newport Networks to broaden its distributed SBC portfolio with the introduction of the 310 Border Gateway range which can be employed in distributed architectures.

Sorting out the mess that is IP Interconnect

So is there an IP interconnect mess? Telecom TV seemed to think so when they invited a panel to discuss it on "The Main Agenda" slot at Telecom TV. Alan Nunn joined Brian Levy from HP and Keith Miller from Appium to talk through some of the issues in this area.

The discussion included the breadth of services being interconnected and touched on everything from PSTN, through best-efforts voice and on to multiway video and IPTV. It then moved on to talk about some of the issues which included regulation, commercial models and of course technical issues.
